Read this before you take the leap.
If you’re not absolutely elated about it, don’t do it.
Don’t do it because you are married for 2 years or 10,
Don’t do it because it’s the natural next step,
Don’t do it because everyone else thinks you should,
Don’t do it because one day you have to.
Don’t do it because your friends are doing it,
And you think you should too.
Don’t do it because you’re 30 or over,
Don’t do it because you need a purpose,
Or a distraction from bigger problems,
Or just something cute to play with.
Don’t do it to plan for a babymoon,
Or for the fancy photoshoot,
Not even to shop for the pretty frocks and the tiny socks,
Or to put that baby name to perfect use.
Don’t do it because it’s your parents wish,
Not even if they offer to baby-sit.
You shouldn’t do it because you’re just tired of questions,
Or of giving answers.
Don’t do it because they tell you you’ll never be ready,
Because someday you will be,
And so will your partner be,
Emotionally, mentally, and financially.
You will feel a void,
None other can fill.
You will be ready for the sleepless nights and the countless cries,
And the dirty diapers and the frothy burps.
One day, you will want nothing more,
And you’ll be ready to give it no less than it takes.
One day, you’ll have the time and the love that you must,
To take charge and fulfill the duties.
One day, it will be your will and not someone else’s,
It will be your priority and not just another thing on the to-do list,
That’s when you should have a baby.
